Nearly 40 veterinarians and other specialists placed a cast on the fractured toe of a 4,500-pound southern white rhinoceros at San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park. The fracture was discovered during a routine exam and confirmed with X-rays, and the rhino had to be anesthetized during the procedure to place the cast, which is fortified with tire tread to support the animal’s weight.
