DNA from Babesia venatorum parasites, which cause babesiosis, was found in the blood of sheep in northeastern Scotland, marking the first sign the parasite is present in the UK. The sheep showed no signs of illness, and University of Glasgow scientist Willie Weir says though the threat to people is probably low, veterinarians and health care providers should be alert to the health risk.
