Three ruffed grouse shot by hunters in Itasca County, Minn., had Eastern equine encephalitis, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. The hunters noticed the birds were unable to fly and had low muscle mass, and scientists at the University of Minnesota’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory say at least one of the birds had a swollen brain.
