Gut bacteria affect GI tract function, nutrient absorption, immunity, body condition and hormonal activity, and they are important to dogs’ overall health and well-being, says veterinarian Audrey Cook, an associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. To prevent dysbiosis, Dr. Cook suggests using antibiotics only as prescribed; feeding dogs a consistent, high-quality diet; and consulting a veterinarian before giving dogs probiotics.
